Juneteenth is a day of celebration and remembrance for African-Americans. Celebrated with parades, cookouts, and good ol southern soul food, the legacy of our ancestors is strengthened on June 19th, more and more each year as we reclaim our traditions and remember our heritage.
On June 19, 1865, the Union Soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, It was on this day that General Gordon Granger first announed the Order which read:
"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."
Today on Juneteenth 2020, we honor and uplift all of our ancestors who fought for our freedom as we celebrate and enjoy the fruits of their labor and our own.
